The Province of New York existed from 1664 when it was transferred from Dutch control to the English, until 1776 when The New York Provincial Congress Declared itself the Governing body of the State of New York. The British formally acknowledged that in 1783 with the signing of the treaty of Paris. After changing from New Amsterdam to New York in 1664 New York encompassed an area including much of modern day New England.
